Languages, Literacy and Communication Area of Learning and Experience is designed to equip learners, as citizens of a bilingual Wales and a multilingual world, with the ability to use Welsh, English and international languages.

By raising an awareness of the diversity of languages from a young age, learners will be enabled to recognise similarities between languages and also embrace the differences between them. They will be supported to develop an understanding of the origins, evolution and features of Welsh, English and international languages which will provide them with a set of skills that goes beyond those of Languages, Literacy and Communication which include, for example, creativity, resilience, adaptability and empathy.

Meaningful learning experiences, cultural visits, the Criw Cymraeg, weekly Welsh celebrations, URDD activities, winning the Gwobr Efydd and Gwobr Arian and working towards the Gwobr Aur. This area of learning and experience will therefore foster in the learners a pride in their sense of identity as citizens of Wales and the world.

English

This area aims to support learning across the whole curriculum and to enable learners to gain knowledge and skills in Welsh, English and international languages as well as in literature.   Languages, Literacy and Communication embeds the Four purposes throughout, enabling learners to develop within every purpose. 

Learning and experience in this Area aims to enable learners to communicate effectively using Welsh, English and international languages. It aims to encourage learners to transfer what they have learned about how languages work in one language to the learning and

learners’ curiosity and enthusiasm and provide them with a firm foundation for a lifelong interest in the languages of Wales and the languages of the world.

What Matters in Languages, Literacy and Communication is represented in 4 statements:

• Languages connect us.
• Understanding languages is key to understanding the world around us.
• Expressing ourselves through languages is key to communication.
• Literature fires imagination and inspires creativity.

Progression in Languages, Literacy and Communication:

1. Increasing breadth and depth of knowledge.
2. Deepening understanding of the ideas and disciplines within areas of learning and experience.
3. Refinement and growing sophistication in the use and application of skills.
4. Making connections and transferring learning into new contexts.
5. Increasing effectiveness as a learner.

Languages, Literacy and Communication is central to learners becoming ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives.
